He could see the smoke from Tower 1, where his firm's office was on the 89th floor. Farley, the partner in charge of the New York branch of Philadelphia's Drinker Biddle & Reath, continued on his way, eventually reaching the base of the tower before it collapsed. Ordinarily Farley would have been at work by then, but he'd been up late with a computer problem at home. Other typically early arrivers were also fortuitously late; a partner with a cold had slept late; Farley's secretary had bypassed a crowded train to take a later one; another secretary was temporarily waylaid by a cosmetics sale near the tower's lobby. But not everyone from Drinker Biddle was safe, nor could Farley at first be sure who was or wasn't at work already. For the next 14 hours, he would serve as the hub of an e-mail network desperately seeking information on the well-being of Drinker Biddle's lawyers and staff. Farley used a BlackBerry handheld device on the train, at the scene, and throughout the day as he made his way home. These are excerpts from his e-mails that day.
