/South Florida Business Journal/ August 11, 2006- Karen Unger founded American Document Management in 1990. Today, Unger’s primary role is to set the agenda and lead the AmDoc team to successful accomplishment of the company’s goals and objectives. She creates the vision, articulates the goals and leads the executive team in the strategic planning process.
Unger is an expert on imaging, document management and litigation support, but also an expert in choosing people to work in her company.
Almost 80percent of AmDoc’s employees are women and more than 60 percent of the management team is female. Unger has been instrumental in identifying talent of both genders, providing management training opportunities and active mentoring leading to multiple promotions.
Unger has mentored and promoted many women into management and executive roles. Take, for example, VP Pat Schaefer, who joined AmDoc 10 years ago as a project manager. Unger identified her exceptional talent, mentored her, promoted her three times and brought her into an increasing ownership position. Unger also helped a marketing coordinator who started as a receptionist. Within a year, Unger helped develop and promote her to a marketing assistant role then into an account executive position and, most recently into the management role she is in today.
Unger is currently involved in Leadership Fort Lauderdale as a curriculum chair, Kids In Distress Chocolate Fantasy Event co-chair, Girl Scouts of Broward County and the South Florida Technology Alliance.
Unger holds a degree in music education from the University of Colorado.
